Did you know that your choice of domain name is one of the most significant factors affecting your external SEO and the ranking of your pages in the search engines? If you have any existing website, how much thought went into choosing the domain name? I have about 20 live websites and, with the exception of the most recent ones, I can honestly say that I spent very little time considering what the domain name should be. This website, boxed.com.au, was given to me by someone whose business didn't make it. I like the name, it was short and generic, so I took it over to create Boxed Search Services. I suspect that many people have chosen their domain names in similarly random fashion.

Now, somewhat wiser, I see the true value in choosing the right domain name. I see domain names that other businesses have registered and wonder "Why?". One example is visionpt.com.au. I understand that these guys are quite big, so you might already know that they're a personal training franchise company (hence 'pt'), but what a poor choice of domain name. The website actually does reasonably well in Google's results, but I can't help thinking that much of the effort that's obviously been expended could have been used to more effect with a better domain name. visionpersonaltraining.com.au is registered, but currently goes to a blank page.

As an example, a quick search of 'personal training' in Google (Australian results) shows the visionpt.com.au website in 4th spot. Above it in 3rd spot is www.personaltraining.com.au, as site which at the time of writing hadn't even launched.
