Will ecommerce benefit from the global economic crisis

It's impossible to predict with any confidence just how badly Australia will be hit by the effects of the global economic downturn. Depending on who you believe, Australia is either ideally placed to weather this storm, or precariously dependent on overseas commodity purchases that will slow significantly. But how will this effect the local ecommerce industry?

It is my prediction that, like all industries, there may be casualties online as well as offline. However, I also believe that online stores, particularly those with some history, will benefit as shoppers look for better value. With the exchange rate against the US dollar down almost 50% compared to recent highs prices in stores will start to rise in the lead up to Christmas as the effect of restocking at the new prices is passed on to customers. Though online stores might not be able to avoid those same rises, their lower pricing will become more attractive to Xmas shoppers looking for a bargain.

If you run an ecommerce store, it's not too late to review your search engine optimisation techniques and internet marketing strategies to ensure you're ready to cope with the Xmas rush.
